The Department of Mass Communication and Journalism provides seven scholarships. Among them, Professor SitaraParvin Award is given to top 10 students on the basis of their results in BSS (Hons), while scholarship programs on eminent journalist Ataus Samad and renowned editor Abdus Salam are awarded to Masters Students, considering their results and families’ economic condition. Students are often awarded gold medals by faculties or by the University in recognition of their academic performance.
Professsor Sitara Parvin Trust
Professor Sitara Parvin Trust was formed in 2006 with the objective of awarding 10 top ranking graduate students of Mass Communication and Journalism. Accordingly Professor Sitara Parvin award giving began in 2007.
Dr. SitaraParvin, former Professor of Mass Communication and Journalism, died in a road accident in the USA on June 23, 2005. She was the daughter of former President Justice Shahabuddin Ahmed and wife of Dr. Ahaduzzaman M. Ali, Professor of Mass Communication and Journalism at the University of Dhaka.
Abdus Salam Memorial Trust
Abdus Salam scholarship is awarded to five Masters Students in consideration of their academic performance and economic condition of their families. This scholarship was introduced in 2015.
Abdus Salam was the Editor of The Pakistan Observer, which was renamed The Bangladesh Observer after the liberation of Bangladesh. He served this newspaper from 1949 to 1972.
The late journalist A B M Musa donated money to create Abdus Salam Memorial Trust Fund.
Ataus Samad Memorial Scholarship
Five students are awarded Ataus Samad Memorial Scholarship on the basis of their outstanding academic results in Master’s examination and economic condition of their families.
AtausSamad was the advisory editor of Amar Desh, chief executive officer of NTV and a part-time teacher of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism. He was awarded Ekushey Padak in 1992 by the Government of Bangladesh.
The late journalist A B M Musa donated money to create Ataus Samad Memorial Trust Fund.
Novera-Deepita Memorial Scholarship:
The student who secures the highest CGPA in the BSS (Hons) from the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism receives the Novera Deepita Memorial Trust Fund scholarship every year. The student gets Tk 25,000 and a certificate from this scholarship.
Novera-Deepita was an outstanding student of this department. She served at The Daily Star. She passed away on July 27 in 2006.
Towhidul Anwar and Ali Haider Trust
The student who secures the highest CGPA or first position in first year BSS (Hons) examination in the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism receives the Towhidual Anwar and Ali Haider Trust Scholarship. This was initiated in 2001.
Dr. Towhidul Anwar was a Professor of Mass Communication and Journalism Department. Ali Haider, a final year BSS student of this Department, died in a road accident.
Tazin Memorial Trust
The student who obtains the first position in the first year BBS examination receives this award.
Tazin was a first year student of this department who died in a road mishap.
Sanjeeb Chowdhury Scholarship
The student who is in the second year of BSS (Hons) is awarded Sanjeeb Choudhury Scholarship for his/her outstanding academic result and family’s economic condition.
Sanjeeb Choudhury, former student of the department was an eminent singer, lyricist, and journalist. He was a leading member of the Bengali band Dalchhut.
